Sony Pictures and MGM have released a new The Magnificent Seven trailer for director Antoine Fuqua‘s (Training Day, Southpaw) upcoming remake. Scripted by True Detective writer/showrunner Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk (The Equalizer), the film revolves around seven outlaws who band together to protect a small town from a violent industrialist. This latest update of the frequently told Seven Samurai-influenced tale is led by Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, as Fuqua has filled out the cast of this Western with a diverse group of individuals that ranges from Byung-Hun Lee to Manuel Garcia-Rulfo to Vincent D’Onofrio.
The movie looks to be quite fun, and it’s not hard to see that the film was probably greenlit in the wake of the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. While this Western remake is far from a sci-fi space opera, it’s still the story of a group of misfit underdogs who don’t play by the rules going up against a larger threat. Plus, you know, Chris Pratt. Will it be good? I’m mighty curious about Pizzolatto’s involvement, and the chemistry between Washington and Pratt looks to be solid, so count me as cautiously optimistic—although given the cast and gritty/bombastic aesthetic, this feels like a potential breakout hit of the fall movie season.
