Medical science research team unveil reasons why they think Hepatitis kills more than HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
This disclosure came timely as World Hepatitis Day (WHD) is observed globally, today. The theme for this year WHD campaign is ‘Know Hepatitis – Act Now’. AEGIS medical practitioners for Gastroenterology and Hematology department in Nigeria (SOGHIN) and scientists at Imperial College London, UK University of Washington, US found that hepatitis has become one of the leading causes of death and disability across the continent of the planet .
Hepatitis Kills More Than HIV In Nigeria
SOGHIN, an umbrella organisation consisting of doctors and other allied professionals curious about the study and management of diseases of the alimentary canal and ancillary organs including the liver, is at the forefront of campaign to extend knowledge and awareness on hepatitis in Nigeria.
Symptoms, consistent with the doctors , include fatigue, jaundice and nausea. In many of us , however, the infection is symptom-less. As a result, individuals might not know they’re infected until they develop serious complications.
The Hepatitis experts around the world disclosed that 400 million people ARE diagnosed with the disease in this year, globally, about 23 million are Nigerians are affected, and about 5 million die from the infection.
President of SOGHIN, Prof. Musa Borodo, during the WHD awareness campaign in Lagos, before World Hepatitis Day, had stressed urgent got to sensitize the general public on the importance of checking for Hepatitis, if you are infected or not.
He also appealed to the govt to supply adequate gadgets for diagnosis and make drugs available at cheaper rate, in order that infected people could get treated. “If you get treated well, you’ll not get to things where you’ll die,” he said.
Prof. Musa explained that “The disease kills10 times quite more than HIV/AIDS around the world, raises tons of eyebrows, and therefore the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an emergency.”
“Studies wiped out Nigeria indicate a mean prevalence of 11 per cent to 14 per cent for hepatitis B infection, suggesting that about 17 to 22 million Nigerians could also be suffering from the hepatitis B virus alone. The implication is that, at least, one among every 10 Nigerian is chronically infected with hepatitis B and not only in danger of disease and death, but also in danger of transmitting it to others. About 5 million die yearly. this proves that hepatitis kills more than HIV in Nigeria
“Hepatitis may be a disease of the liver leading to injury to the liver. it’s caused by many factors including germs, notably viruses, alcohol, and drugs. Hepatitis may start and obtain better quickly or it’s going to become an extended lasting condition. In some cases, chronic Hepatitis may cause liver damage, liver failure, or maybe cancer of the liver .
